Seven Dental Crowns FAQs Resolved

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a covering or cap for an existing tooth. Almost like a helmet, it makes the tooth stronger, longer lasting and improves the appearance.

Why do we need a Dental Crown?

There are many reasons why your dentist may recommend a crown these include:

  • Your tooth is weakened from decay
  • Protection after root canal treatment
  • Your tooth may be fractured, cracked or damaged
  • Your tooth may be discoloured
  • A dental bridge may be required

How do we perform a crown?

The tooth is prepared for the crown by shaping the tooth ready for the crown. This will mean that any decay will be removed and the outer layer of the tooth is removed. The amount of tooth that your dentist removes is the same thickness of your new crown.

Your dentist will then take physical or digital impressions of the tooth to send off to the technician lab.

The dentist will then place a temporary crown on the tooth. This will protect the tooth until the permanent crown has arrived.

Around two weeks later, once the permanent crown has arrived, you will come back into the practice for your crown cementation.

How to look after your crown?

It is crucial that we look after our oral hygiene always but especially before, during and after a dental procedure like a crown. It is important that you brush and floss twice a day, taking care around your crown.

While your temporary crown is on your tooth it is important to not eat hard or chewy food as we need to preserve the shape of the tooth.

If your temporary crown does happen to pop off, it is completely normal. Give the dental practice a call and we will best direct you.

How long does your crown last?

Your new crown, if looked after, will usually last around 7-15 years.

How does the crown feel within the mouth?

Your new crown may feel a little bit different at first, however as each day goes by you will get used to eating, drinking and speaking with the crown.
