How Veneers Work

A veneer is a thin shell that covers the outer surface of a tooth. They’re typically fitted to multiple teeth at once in the “smile zone” — the teeth you see when you smile or speak with someone. Veneers can be an alternative to options like braces or Clear Aligners depending on your individual case and goals.

Two Appointments for Veneers

You’ll book in for two appointments right away to complete the process for your veneers. The first visit is to prepare your teeth for veneers. It can take 1-3 hours, depending on how many veneers you’re getting. About 2-3 weeks later, you’ll return after our laboratory has custom-fabricated your veneers. At that appointment, the veneers will be permanently attached to your teeth.

We’ll monitor the health of your veneers and the rest of your teeth at your regular checkups, which are carried out every six months.

Veneers FAQ’s

Is it painful to have veneers done?
Dental anaesthetics are used, which makes it comfortable for you. The first appointment takes somewhere from one to three hours, depending on how many veneers you’re getting. This preparation appointment just requires a good amount of sitting for you, but we’ll give you breaks when you need them. You’ll be able to have your choice of music playing to help the time pass by quickly.
Can teenagers have veneers?
Thanks to the rise of social media, many teenagers feel like they don’t have teeth that are as white as some of their peers or the people they follow on Instagram. It’s important to know, however, that the teeth are still growing up until the age of 20. After that point, you may be a candidate for veneers. You cannot get them if your teeth aren’t done growing.
Are there people who are not good candidates for veneers?
Some people don’t have strong enough tooth structure to hold veneers. Or if their jaw closes improperly, it may cause breakage of the veneers. The same result may come if you grind your teeth at night, so we don’t recommend veneers to anyone who has this problem.
How should I care for my veneers?
You should treat your veneers just like they’re natural teeth. Though they can’t become decayed like a normal tooth can, the gum around it is still susceptible to gum disease. Brush and floss around your veneers. We’ll check them at your regular cleaning and examination appointments to make sure they remain healthy.
How will my veneers look?

You’ll be involved in the process of designing your veneers, with input into the shape and colour to suit your smile. Dr Manuel will guide you through the options so your veneers reflect what matters most to you.

Are there alternatives to veneers?
Yes, there may be alternatives to getting veneers depending on what you would like to achieve. For example, if you have chipped or damaged teeth, getting a dental crown or several dental crowns placed on the affected teeth may achieve the same outcomes. We will discuss all possible treatment options with you so that you can decide how you would like to proceed.
Will you be able to tell my veneers from my other teeth?

Veneers are designed to blend naturally with the rest of your smile. If you’d like, you can whiten your natural teeth first, and your veneers can then be matched to that new shade for a consistent result.

Risks and Considerations

As with any dental treatment, it’s important to understand what’s involved before deciding if veneers are right for you:

  • Getting veneers is typically an irreversible process — a small amount of your natural tooth enamel is removed to fit the veneer, and this cannot be undone. Once you have veneers, you’ll need a veneer or crown on that tooth going forward.
  • Veneers can chip or crack if you bite down on very hard foods, ice, or use your teeth to open packaging. Grinding or clenching your teeth (bruxism) can also damage veneers over time — if you grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended.
  • Veneers typically last 10-15 years with proper care, and will eventually need to be replaced.
  • Porcelain Veneers do not respond to teeth whitening, if you’re considering whitening, this should be done before your veneers are made, so they can be colour-matched to your desired shade.
  • Some patients experience temporary sensitivity to hot or cold after the natural tooth is prepared, which usually settles within a few days to weeks.
  • Veneers are not recommended for everyone — patients with significant tooth decay, gum disease, or insufficient natural tooth structure may need other treatment first.
