At Plenty Smiles, we primarily recommend in-chair whitening using the Philips Zoom teeth whitening system. Take-home kits are also available.
In-Office Whitening
In about 2 hours, your in-chair whitening treatment is complete. You’ll be seated in a comfortable dental chair with the soft tissues of your mouth protected, while a whitening solution is applied and activated with a specialised light. This may be repeated during the appointment to reach your desired shade.
Whitening results can last for an extended period with the right care, though this varies by patient. Speak with our dentists to find out if this is the right option for you.
All patients who complete In-Office Whitening also receive a personalised take-home kit to help maintain your results.
Take-Home Kits
We recommend a take-home kit after in-chair whitening. This allows you to touch up your results over time, helping you maintain your whitened smile.

Can I get a take-home kit without doing in-chair whitening?
Yes. For those who would prefer to do their treatment at home, Plenty Smiles also offers a convenient take-home kit that is just as effective. While there are many whitening kits available over the counter, the difference in our take-home kits would be the fact that they would be perfectly customized for you and your specific needs.
How long will the results of whitening last?
The length of time your teeth stay white varies depending on factors like diet, oral hygiene, and the health and structure of your mouth.
Your dentist can give you a better idea of what to expect for your case, and we’re happy to help you maintain your results afterward.
Is there an age limit to whitening?
You must be at least 18 years of age to do any teeth whitening. We recommend that you only undertake whitening once your teeth are finished growing. There is no older limit on having teeth whitening. Note, however, that any restorations you have, such as crowns or bridges, will not respond to whitening, as they are not real teeth.
How long does in-chair whitening take?
Your in-chair whitening procedure takes about an hour. You can schedule during your lunch hour or at another convenient time without having to worry about booking in for a follow-up.
How does having regular checkups impact the colour of my teeth?
Your regular checkups involve an examination of your teeth, identifying any potential problems so they can be addressed. It also involves the removal of buildup from your teeth. This buildup is yellowish in colour and cannot be removed by brushing. You may feel that your teeth look quite bright after having this simple scraping done at the dentist.
Risks and Considerations
As with any dental treatment, it’s helpful to know what to expect from teeth whitening:
- Tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or air is the most common side effect, both during and after treatment. This is usually temporary and settles within a few days.
- Some patients may experience mild gum irritation if whitening gel comes into contact with the gums during treatment — this is minimised by protecting the soft tissue of your mouth during the procedure.
- Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel — it will not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings, or other restorations, which may end up a different shade to your newly whitened teeth.
- Results vary from person to person, depending on factors such as the original shade and cause of discolouration, and how well you maintain your results afterward.
- Whitening is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for anyone under 18. Let your dentist know if you have any current dental issues (such as untreated decay or gum disease), as these should be addressed before whitening.
